Johnny Mountain & The Captain The Waymakers

About The Waymakers

Every organization has a story, and ours begins with people who dedicated their lives to serving others.

The Waymakers are those whose actions helped create a path for future generations through mentorship, friendship, leadership, and service. For Kalapu Halafo'ou, no individuals embody that spirit more than Johnny Mountain and The Captain.

Long before there was a nonprofit organization, they opened their doors, shared their wisdom, and welcomed young people as family. They created a place where people felt seen, valued, and supported. Through their example, they taught us that true leadership is not about recognition—it's about lifting others up and helping them find their way.

Their influence continues to inspire everything we do today. The values of service, brotherhood, compassion, and community that define Kalapu Halafo'ou were shaped by their example and carried forward by many others who helped build this organization.

We also honor the brothers who have passed before us, whose dedication and commitment helped strengthen our foundation and expand our impact. Together, they are our Waymakers—individuals who created opportunities, guided others, and left a lasting legacy of service.

Today, we strive to continue their work by creating new paths for youth and families through mentorship, cultural pride, community outreach, and service. Their legacy reminds us that one person can make a difference and that, together, we can help shape a brighter future for generations to come.

Johnny Mountain

Johnny Mountain was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, friend, and mentor whose impact continues to be felt throughout our community. Born and raised in San Mateo, he was known for his strong work ethic, unwavering loyalty, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

An accomplished all-around athlete and dedicated hard worker, Johnny led by example both on and off the field. Above all, he was devoted to his family and is survived by his loving wife and three daughters, who were the pride and joy of his life.

To those who knew him, Johnny was someone who always showed up. Whether you needed support, guidance, or simply an honest conversation, he could be counted on to be there. He had a unique ability to tell people what they needed to hear—not always what they wanted to hear—and did so with genuine care and love.

Johnny was more than a friend and mentor; he was a Waymaker. Through his actions, leadership, and commitment to others, he helped create a path for countless individuals and left a legacy that continues to inspire us today. His example reminds us of the importance of service, family, and community.

We honor Johnny Mountain not only for who he was, but for the lives he touched and the foundation he helped build. His legacy lives on through the work we do, the people he inspired, and the generations that will continue to benefit from the path he helped create.

The Captain

Dunn Faaumu

The Captain was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, mentor, and friend whose impact on our community will never be forgotten. Born and raised in San Mateo, he was known for his larger-than-life personality, sharp sense of humor, and incredible wisdom. He is survived by his loving wife and seven children, who were at the center of everything he did.

To those who knew him, The Captain was someone who could always bring a smile to your face. Whether through a joke, a story, or a simple conversation, he had a unique gift for making people feel welcomed and valued. At the same time, he was never afraid to tell it like it was. He believed in honesty, accountability, and helping people become the best version of themselves by telling them what they needed to hear rather than what they wanted to hear.

The Captain dedicated countless hours to serving others, especially through youth sports and church activities. He was heavily involved with the San Mateo Wolverines and was always willing to volunteer his time to support young people and their families. His commitment to mentorship, service, and community helped shape the lives of many who had the privilege of knowing him.

More than anything, The Captain was a true Waymaker. He led through action, gave without expecting anything in return, and inspired others to do the same. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the example he set. We honor him by continuing the work he cared so deeply about—serving others, building community, and helping create a better path for future generations.
